Propane Information

Propane Molecule

Propane is the most common liquefied petroleum gas (LP-Gas) and supplies about 4% of the U.S. total energy needs.  It is a hydrocarbon composed of three parts carbon and eight parts hydrogen, or C3H8. Propane comes from two sources – when refining crude oil and when processing natural gas.  Propane is a colorless, odorless gas.  A commercial odorant is added in order to make propane detectable in the case of a leak.

Propane is an approved alternative clean fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act, as well as the National Energy Policy Act of 1992  It continues to serve approximately 60 million people in the United States.

Propane is a liquid stored under pressure in specially designed containers.  In most systems, propane is vaporized to a gas before it leaves the container and then is dispensed through a pressure regulator to your propane appliances.
